Johnny Rockets has decades of brand recognition and a strong association with classic Americana, but nostalgia alone isn’t enough to stay relevant with today’s consumer. The challenge was to modernize the expression of the brand without modernizing away what people love about it.
We set out to create a Johnny Rockets that could resonate with a new generation while maintaining it’s origins. We stripped back years of trends and attempts to modernize the brand. We wanted the brand to look and feel like a 1950’s diner (modeled after LA’s The Apple Pan) while bringing its energy, personality and sense of nostalgia forward in a way that feels more confident, contemporary and culturally relevant.

We approached the refresh by looking at what made Johnny Rockets iconic in the first place and resisted the urge to reinvent it. Instead of chasing contemporary trends, we went back to the brand’s roots in diner culture and then distilled those elements into a more confident and contemporary visual system. The original burger stands were simple. The menus were short, easy to scan and focused on the food. We took that idea into the new menu design, stripping away some of the noise and giving the food more room to speak for itself.
We built a visual identity that could flex between nostalgic and modern using mid-century shapes, color, illustration, typography and space-age interior design. The result gives Johnny Rockets the freedom to celebrate its history by creating a brand world that feels authentic to longtime fans, but fresh enough to invite a new generation in.
